We will go beyond straight forward Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
We've not attempted a straight SEO project for any of our customers, since nine times out of ten, they want website changes and improvements as well. But we do know a bit about SEO; we develop
sites with SEO in mind.
In WordPress sites we use the SEO plugin called "all-in-one-seo-pack" ( See Request a makeover
Request some updatesRequest a replacementRequest technical upgradesRequest extensionsAll in One SEO Pack(...) )
And in Drupal sites we follow ALL of the guidelines in the Drupal 6 Search Engine Optimization book (which is accompanied by an SEO checklist module seochecklist(...))
There are some SEO specialists who will charge an arm and a leg for performing SEO on a website AFTER it's been developed But I make sure the majority of the work is done DURING website creation or migration. The tools are just an aid to getting it right.
Some of the things that are done are visible to end users, others are for the search engines.
Things people think about when doing SEO include:
- page titles
- headings
- using keywords early on in content
- using key phrases in strong or emphasised tags
- giving pictures sensible names
- giving links sensible name
- making sure "alt" and "title" information is available
- completing keywords and meta data
- developing according to web standards
- using microformats - so search engines recognise addresses, telephone numbers, locations, names etc
- sensibly dealing with not found
- good use of links
- there's more... but I'll stop here.
In response to a question of mine about "what was the most important part of SEO" an 'expert' I met at First Friday Chichester replied "what's the most important part of an aeroplane - the engine or the wings?"
Of course, I was supposed to agree that it was both. But my mind doesn't work that way... He wasn't allowing for gliders.
So the answer to the most important part of SEO is not 'the keywords' but 'the content'. Lots of it... all subtly different, but beautifully related and unique.
